We have just been asked by a press agency why we are organizing the Run 4 Reforestation... And it reminded me of my post from a few days ago.
The fires on the Plateau are heartbreaking enough.
But there are fires everywhere - an unprecedented number in the Amazon, in the evergreen forests of the artic circle, and these are the ones that are hitting the news.
But when I say they are hitting the news, the articles have nearly all been lower down in order of importance, you had to be scrolling througj th lower reaches of the news pages.
Brexit is obviously up there at the top of the list, along with Trump and the US elections, other political stories, murders in Thailand, a Victorian shipwreck etc. I understand that Brexit should be up there (just get on with it!) And yes, what Trump says and does sadly affects us all as do the next US presidential elections but the Thai murders?! A shipwreck?!
How much coverage did the fire at Notre Dame have? Plenty. And how much money poored in? Plenty more. The French even decided to create a lottery so as to raise money to protect their heritage - great!
So there is money to protect the past - but how about the future? Who cares about that?
Oh I am sure that once we are mostly gone someone will erect a lovely monument to humanity and maintain it for all time!
I am generally of an optimist disposition but it sometimes helps if there were more positive news around.
So yes, we are planting trees and protecting areas from fires and Malawi (the planet) desperately needs more people to do the same :)
