We understand that people need firewood for cooking but also for heating (it gets pretty chilly up here in the winter!)
We also understand that they need a form of income and they would hugely benefit from extra nutrition - so we want to try to address all these issues:
-We are planting fruit trees so that the communities can harvest the fruit.
- We are planting fast growing trees that can be coppiced (that regrow with multiple trunks once cut) to provide firewood
- Nitrogen fixing trees to improve the soil
- Soil retention trees to reduce soil erosion
We also eventually aim to teach the communities how to build solar dryers so that the excess fruit can be dried and either eaten later (during the hungry season) or sold, providing them with a source of income.
And we would like to set up beehives once the ecosystem has sufficiently recovered as an extra source of income.
There is a lot that can be done and we would like to do as much as possible but it all takes time and money so we are taking small steps :)
"Catch! calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
"It's a Truffula seed, it;s the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax and all his friends may come back"
